Winterizing a home is an important step in the fall. Many people do not realize that homes are at a greater risk of fire in the winter months. These fall & winter fire safety tips can help you prepare your home and protect your family
Fall fire safety tips are usually based around common sense. First, be sure to change the battery in smoke detectors when you change your clocks during Daylight Savings. Changing the batteries every six months prevents detectors from going dead.
Another fall fire safety tip is to clean your chimney's fireplace. Creosote is a deposit from smoke that can build up in a chimney. If it gets too thick, it can start on fire and destroy the house. The chimney should be cleaned each year before using the fireplace's first use. Space heaters can also be a fire hazard. At least a 3-foot clearance should be kept around all space heaters. An adult should be in the room at all times that a space heater is in use. Children should be prevented rom playing near space heaters.
